ITV Good Morning Britain halted for breaking news as Susanna Reid says ‘this is big’

Good Morning Britain was interrupted on Monday morning as hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley went live to Downing Street

Good Morning Britain was halted for breaking news on Monday (May 12) as host Susanna Reid said “this is big”.

During today’s edition of the hit ITV morning programme, Susanna and her co-star, Richard Madeley, brought viewers the latest news from the UK and around the world.

Towards the end of the show, the hosts quickly interrupted proceedings to go live to Downing Street, where the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, was giving a press conference on immigration.

“That in itself is notable isn’t it? The Prime Minister knows that the morning shows are live and will broadcast that at 8.30,” Susanna explained earlier in the broadcast.

“Could have held a press conference at 10 o’clock in the morning, wouldn’t have been live on network news, so this is big.”

The Prime Minister addressed the nation ahead of a white paper that will include a string of measures aimed at driving down net migration.

Starmer will pledge a “clean break with the past” as he sets out sweeping reforms.

He also promises that “enforcement will be tougher than ever and migration numbers will fall.”

During today’s press conference, the Prime Minster explained: “Today we publish a white paper on immigration. A strategy absolutely central to my plan for change that will finally take back control of our borders, and close the book on a squalid chapter for our politics, our economy and our country.”

“We will create a migration system that is controlled, selective and fair. A clear break with the past that links access to visas directly to investment with home grown skills.”

“So, if a business wants to bring people in from abroad, they must first invest in Britain, but also a settlement that becomes a privilege that is earned, not a right.”

He concluded: “Some people may even be against that, I think for the vast majority of people in this country, that is what they have long wanted to see. An immigration system that is fair, that works for our national interest, and that restores common sense and control to our borders.

“That is what this white paper will deliver. Lower net migration, higher skills backing British workers, the start of repairing our social contract.”

Susanna later described the speech as “extraordinary”, saying that she was “amazed” at how “negative” the Prime Minister began.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am
