Rangers ‘interested in signing English Premier League defender who is out of contract this summer’

RANGERS are reportedly interested in signing an English Premier League defender on a free transfer this summer.

A new manager is the priority for Rangers at this moment of time but scouts have been working down a shortlist of players in the meantime to improve the side for whoever takes the reigns next season.

We already told you how Rangers are eying up midfielder Metinho, who has been dubbed the Brazilian Paul Pogba.

The Ibrox recruitment team have been looking at players across several positions and one particular area they’ve been focusing on is defence.

And one of the targets being assessed is Ipswich centre-back Cameron Burgess, according to the Rangers Review.

Burgess, 29, has earned back-to-back promotions under Kieran McKenna and made 19 aappearances in the top flight this season.

The Tractor Boys have been relegated to the Championship and Burgess’ future remains unclear with his contract almost up.

Burgess was born in Scotland but emigrated to Australia with his family when he was 11 and opted to represent the Socceroos on the international stage.

The left-sided defender is being eyed with the aim of competing with Clinton Nsiala for the starting berth, with the report suggesting Robin Propper could be on his way out of Ibrox.

The Dutchman only joined the club from FC Twente last summer but has struggled to adapt to Scottish football – despite netting against Celtic in the New Year Old Firm derby.

It’s stated that it’s likely the veteran will be put up for sale and could join out-of-contract Leon Balogun out the door.

The Nigerian remains hopeful he will stay at Ibrox for at least another season.

Discussing his future at the club this week, he said: “I’m very blessed that from a young age my father taught me the value of patience.

“So I’m just going to have patience as always, as I’ve had all my life.

“Then I just have to see what’s happening. It’s hard to say because it’s not in my control.

“They’re on the search for a manager and that’s not my business really.

“Without trying to sound arrogant, age is nothing but a number.

“I’ve looked after myself throughout my whole career pretty well, I’d like to think, which is the reason why I can still perform at this level.

“If felt that I was starting to really struggle, I would admit it, but I absolutely do not feel that way.

“I felt even at times this season and even last season I trained more than ever.”
