Peter Andre issues 6 word quip to Jafaican critics after backlash over trailer

EXCLUSIVE: Peter Andre’s new film Jafaican recently hit cinemas and the Aussie singer-turned-actor has spoken to Daily Star about the role, with a six word quip to critics

Peter Andre has addressed critics of his new film Jafaican.

The Mysterious Girl singer is the lead star in Fredi Nwaka’s new comedy, which follows wheeler-dealer Gary Buckle as he attempts to nab a fortune by posing as gangster Denton ‘Kill Man’ Powell while wearing a dreadlock wig and faking a Jamaican accent.

Although Jafaican has been given good reviews since its premiere, the film has also received backlash as a number of people have accused the movie of cultural appropriation, with some branding the flick as “tone-deaf”.

However, Peter Andre has spoken exclusively with Daily Star and issued a message to those who have criticised his role.

Andre said: “I think it’s very easy to criticise something based on a trailer. I would say: ‘Go and watch the film first,’ you will see what the film is about and you will see the context. But, a critic should also be able to criticise, so I understand how it is.”

Peter acknowledged that many will disagree with the project but urged doubters to watch and decide for themselves.

“In regards to critics, I think it is really important for people to all have different opinions. I don’t think it is right to just expect everyone to like what you’re doing, but I’ve always said that, you know, in anything I’ve ever done I’ve always had people saying: ‘Don’t do that, you shouldn’t do that, that’s not the right song to release, that’s not a good video clip.”

The singer-turned-actor, best known for appearing in Mr. Peabody & Sherman, David Brent: Life on the Road and Keith Lemon: The Film, explained why he decided to go ahead with the role.

“If I sat and listened to everybody telling me what not to do, I would never have achieved anything! I think sometimes you have to just go outside of your comfort zone and push yourself.”

The film follows a crook from London who needs to pull together £35,000 to cover his grandmother’s care home fees. After overhearing a tip about a potentially lucrative heist, Gary heads to Jamaica where things spiral out of control.

Locals realise he is pretending to be Denton ‘Kill Man’ Powell in hopes of taking home his millions, which can only end in trouble. Jafaican is out now in select ODEON Cinemas.
