Jon Kay will be absent from BBC Breakfast on Monday (12 May), with Sally Nugent teaming up with a different BBC star to front the programme
Jon Kay will be stepping away from the BBC Breakfast set on Monday (12 May), it has been confirmed, as Sally Nugent welcomes a fresh face alongside her to kick off the show.
The usual duo of Jon and Sally are the familiar faces that greet viewers on the early week mornings—Monday through Wednesday—before Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt take the reins for the remainder of the week.
In a surprising turn, this week’s line-up sees a significant change with Jon missing from his usual spot on the red couch, replaced by Richard Johnson who will step in during his absence.
The update came courtesy of Richard himself during Sunday’s (11 May) edition of BBC Breakfast, where he also disclosed the reason for Jon’s day off from the morning programme.

Richard clarified that Jon’s absence was linked to the BAFTA TV Awards’ nomination of BBC Breakfast, prompting his need to be elsewhere, reports Bristol Live.
“BBC Breakfast was mentioned in Lizo’s report. It’s up for an award as well, which is why I will be back tomorrow morning with Sally – guess where Jon is!” said Richard during the broadcast. “But from all of us today, whatever you do, have a lovely Sunday and thank you for watching.”
Roger, who is accustomed to anchoring the Sunday segments of BBC Breakfast, is amongst those from a rotating cast who sometimes deliver the news on Sundays – a list that includes Rachel Burden, Ben Thompson, Nina Warhurst, Ben Boulos, Sarah Campbell, Tina Daheley, and Luxmy Gopal.
Earning its place among the BAFTA TV Award contenders, the flagship BBC One program received a nod in the News Coverage category, honouring the BBC Breakfast: Post Office Special, an exceptional episode from last year helmed by Jon.
The poignant TV special featured nine victims of the Post Office scandal sharing their stories on BBC Breakfast, marking the first public recounting of their experiences for some.
Also vying for the award in the same category were two separate reports by Channel 4 News – Inside Sednaya and Undercover Inside Reform’s Campaign.
Other categories included Drama Series, Limited Drama and Scripted Comedy. The shows with the most nominations at the 2025 awards included Baby Reindeer, Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, Rivals, Slow Horses, Mr Loverman, Say Nothing, The Traitors, Sherwood, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light and Gavin & Stacey: The Finale.
This year’s awards bash took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with actor and presenter Alan Cumming on hosting duties. The ceremony was broadcast live on BBC One on Sunday, 11 May.
